Last Friday afternoon my sister and I left in another scouts car to go to a sibling camp. It was a 3 hour drive to get there, but on the way we stopped
at Subway for a sandwich and dinner. When we were there, a bit late from the 5:00 traffic, the meeting had already started. When I was listening, I saw my friend Ella, who I did Cubs with but then I moved up to scouts. I also saw my buddy from school, Niamh, a year two up the front. I tried to wave to both of them but they wouldn't look. When the meeting finished, I ran up to Ella and said hi. She recognized me straight away and Niamh did too; she gave me a huge hug! We put our bags away in the dorms (all the girls were in the same one), set up our beds and went back to the dining room to get supper, which was Milo and some cookies. As soon as we'd finished we went to bed. We stayed up nearly all night that adults had to stay
in our room until we were a
sleep.
sleep.
We woke at around 6:30 in the
morning, got
morning, got
changed and
went to have breakfast. We could choose out of, cereal, hash browns, sausages, eggs, fruit and Weetbix. Then we had free time for about half an hour. All four of us girls went to the play on the playground, but it was wood and wet and slippery. So we went to play on these bars and then Maia (Ella's sister) joined in. Then the bell rang so we went to flag. When the flag was put up we were put in groups for activities. Annabelle, Ella, Niamh, Maia and I (and some other boys) got put in the same group, which was called the gold miners. We got told to pack our bags for a long hike at Karangahake gorge. We needed a drink bottle, a raincoat, a torch and we packed some extra and secret food for emergencies. We got driven to the gorge and in our groups we slowly left the start and across the first wobbly bridge. We went past the second wobbly bridge and up a hill. It had been about 15 minutes until we were told to get our torches out of our bags because there was a 2 km tunnel in front of us. It was really dark and echo-y in the tunnel. It was sooooo long!! When we finally got out it was so bright. we stopped to have a drink and a little snack-raisins and muesli bars. We went on another bridge but not a long one and went to the riverside and threw some rocks in. Then we went back to the car park for lunch, which was jam, ham and cheese sandwiches(not together). After lunch had finished we went on another long hike on the other side of the mountain. We were so tired when we came back!! The person who took us on the way(Nick) was in charge of us. So he needed to get some groceries, we went with him. After he had finished he bought us ice-creams at a dairy. When we got back, we played on the playground, which was dry. Afterwards it was afternoon tea. We got juice and baked goods. Then we got called in for activities.
First we had flying water bottles, which was when we filled up a large drinking bottle half to the top with water and put it on top of a pump. We put a peg on it to hold down the pressure and then started pumping. When it got to 40 we pulled off the peg and the water bottle went flying.
Next was jousting, but instead of horses, we used bikes, and instead of swords, we used bamboo sticks with tennis balls in the end and instead if hitting other people, we used targets that span around and had water on the other side. So if you were to slow, you got soaked!!
Thirdly and also lastly was Burma trail. It was long and I kept crashing into plants. At the end, instead of someone holding a rope, they tied it to a spade and stuck the spade in the ground. I was feeling where the rope was on the spade when BANG!!! Maia had walked straight into me(which was when I figured it was the end).
For the next activity, everyone joined in. It was a water fight. We got really soaked and had to shower afterwards. Then It was free time, but we just played in the dorm. Afterwards it was dinner which was burgers and fries. ( We used 18 kilos of fries, 20 kilos of patties and 100 buns). After wards we had dessert which was baked goods and Milo. Then we had to go to bed, but earlier than last night because we stayed up to long.
In the morning we had some breakfast, which was normal toast, cereal, baked beans, eggs, hash browns and sausages. After breakfast we did the flag and went straight to our activities.
My first one was flying fox. It was really fun but if you didn't duck you hit your head really hard on the tires.
My second activity was orienteering and we went around the campsite looking for things. At the end, my group won and we got lollies.
My third activity was tents. We put up some tents and then we put them down and packed them up. When we had finished, everyone was already eating morning tea, so we joined in. We played on the obstacle course but we got called in to pack our things up. Annabelle, Ella, Maia, Niamh and I had already packed when we woke up so we just played. After everyone had tidied up we did a rubbish check . After we were sure there was no rubbish left lying, we went to do the flag and were free to go home!!
I said bye to all my friends and was ready for a long trip back home.
