My Anzac Poem

It was the 25th of April today,
I was going to the Anzac parade.
They were selling poppy's in town today,
For those soldiers who marched away.
They travelled to Turkey with lots of things,
Like horses and even animals with wings.
Big heavy things for the donkeys to carry,
But had no food like berries or cherries.
But we are to remember those,
Who died for us and let us go.

Growth Mind Set

At school we learnt about growth mind set and fixed mind set. Which one to use????? Use growth mind set. Lets start positive on the growth mind set. What is growth mind set?? Growth mind set is trying until its perfect and  believe that your most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. We watched a video called Austin's Butterfly, have a look and you will soon know what growth mind set is.

You should always do what Austin did. He was only in year 1.

Now for fixed mind set. What is fixed mind set??? Fixed mind set is basically the opposite of growth mind set. It is like saying something like, it's to hard or I can't do it.

Here is something from Carol Dweck-In a fixed mind set students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that’s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.

Remember Practice Makes Perfect!!!!

ANZAC Day

Anzac Day is on 25 April. On this day we honour all the men and women who have participated in wars. It commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war and also honours returned servicemen and women. ANZAC stands for Australian New Zealand Army Corps.

Thousands lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign: 87,000 Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire, including 8500 Australians. To this day, Australia also marks the events of 25 April. Among the dead were 2779 New Zealanders, about a fifth of those who served on Gallipoli. On ANZAC day there is heaps of different services which you can go to , to remember those who died for our freedom.

The red poppy has become a symbol of war remembrance the world over. People in many countries wear the poppy to remember those who died in war or who still serve. In many countries, the poppy is worn around Armistice Day (11 November), but in New Zealand it is most commonly seen around Anzac Day.
The red or Flanders poppy has been linked with battlefield deaths since the time of the Great War (1914–18). The plant was one of the first to grow and bloom in the mud and soil of Flanders. The connection was made, most famously, by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in his poem 'In Flanders fields'.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Day 1

                                       Friday  10.4.15

Dear Diary,

I was really excited because my Mum, Dad, sister and I were leaving for Christchurch for my cousins wedding. VROOM VROOOOOM, the large taxi came down our drive. We put our things in the boot and jumped in. Then the taxi took us all the way to the domestic airport. When we arrived there we got our big bag to the luggage conveyor belt and waited for the plane to come at the gate. Not to long after we had sat down the plane landed to pick us up. We went in and found our seats and prepared  for the ride south. It was about one and a half hour flight there. When we landed in Christchurch we went to get our bags and our rental car. We drove for an hour or two to the Rakaia Gorge where we were staying at Terrace Downs ( a place with lots of houses). Everyone else was staying there too. We put our luggage in the lodge and went to the restaurant to get some lunch. While we were there I saw our Aunty walk past, she was really busy because our cousin (her daughter) Maria was getting married and we were flower girls at her wedding. Aunty told us we were having a party that night. So we went to the boys house (where Simon, who Maria was going to marry stayed). At the party we met all the bridesmaids and the other two flower girls who had flown in from Perth Australia. We had some food and practised what we were going to do the next day. Then it was bed time so we all went back to our lodge.

Class Pet

Dear Miss Cooper,

I have really enjoyed term 1 but in term 2 could we PLEEEEASE have a class pet?  Here are my reasons for having a class pet.

I think we should get a class pet because ........

1. Gives You Something To Be Responsible For.
No matter what type of pet you get, it will require you to take care of it. Being responsible for another living thing can help you be more responsible in the rest of your life too. This is especially true for us kids who are learning to take leadership and be responsible.

Here is the evidence:
Children with pets develop a sense of responsibility and care for others early on in life.  Pets need care and attention all the time.  They depend on their humans to feed, entertain, and exercise them.  Children who are active in raising their pets usually learn how to be empathetic and compassionate. Learning how to be responsible for another creature will allow the kids to better take care of themselves as well.

2.Having a routine.
When you have a pet you have a routine, when to feed it, Clean it, exercise it, take it to the vet etc. So, if you have a pet with a routine then you can then much easily have your own routine e.g. when to wake up, when to eat, when to play and when to study and work hard or do your homework etc.

Here is the evidence for this:
Having a routine: The routine of caring for a pet can bring structure and purpose to daily life. Maybe you don't always want to get out of bed, but your pet wants you to. Isn't that a good thing?

3.Pets bring new ways to learn
If we get a classroom pet it will always bring new ways to learn. We will relate to the animals and talk about them in all sorts of different ways.

Here is the proof for this:
Pets Bring so Many New Ways to Learn
Whether it’s Math (“how much does a hamster weigh?”) Or Science, (“what does a snake eat?”) Geography (“what part of the world do ferrets come from?”) or Grammar (“what words would we use to describe a goldfish?”) students will approach learning all these subjects with a new enthusiasm and interest. Other classes can even come visit our classroom pets and we can create special presentations about the animals.

4.Pets give Experience

For kids without pets at home (like me) or who aren't allowed pets, having a class pet can be great for them and they can play with the animals and do much more things with the pet they can't do at home

Here is the evidence:

Pets Enrich the Classroom Experience
• Even kids with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch and make connections to the wide world of animals.
• Observing and caring for an animal installs a sense of responsibility and respect for life.
• A pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans.
• Kids learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival.
• Students will see directly how their behaviour and actions affect others.
• Studies show that the presence of animals tends to lessen tension in the classroom.
